Welcome !
The history, geography, and social issues surrounding coffee commerce are fascinating! Did you know coffee is the second most traded commodity on the planet? Here's another fun fact: more than 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed each day throughout the world. Read below to learn more about the history, geography, and social impact of coffee.
The first coffee plants are believed to have come from the East African shores. Historically, coffee beans were eaten as a food and not consumed as a beverage. East African tribes would grind the coffee cherries together, mixing the results into a paste with animal fat. Rolled into little balls, the mixture was said to give warriors much-needed energy for battle. Later, around the year 1000 AD, Ethiopians concocted a type of wine from coffee berries, fermenting the dried beans in water. Coffee also grew naturally on the Arabian Peninsula, and it was there, during the 11th century that coffee was first developed into a hot drink.
Geography plays a great influence on the taste of our coffee. The soil type, altitude, and exposure to sunlight create distinct flavors within our coffees that are bold and nuanced. For example, the volcanic soil and high altitude in which our Kenya AA coffee is grown gives this coffee audacious flavor with a hint of citrus. Let your taste buds begin the journey, click here.
